The Explorer Program was created to introduce young people to law enforcement as a career opportunity. The Explorer Program was first organized by the Boy Scouts of America in 1964 and was known as Explorer Scouts. The Explorer Program was introduced to Marina in the late 1970’s. At that time the Explorer program was administered by Officers of the department who volunteered their time. In 2008 the program joined with the Marina Police Department's Police Activities League.
The Marina Police Department in association with the Police Activities League is committed to maintaining an outstanding career training program for its police explorers. The individual's personal initiative is the most decisive factor in their success.
The purpose and goals of the Explorer program in the Marina Police Department are:
In order to be eligible to be a member of the Explorer program in the Marina Police Department, applicants must meet and/or maintain the following eligibility requirements:
Applicants will complete a membership application and submit it to the Explorer Coordinator. Each applicant will be scheduled for an oral interview and will be required to submit a current school transcript. Every applicant will enter the program with the status of Explorer Recruit and will be required to attend an in-house academy just as soon as one becomes available. Upon completion of the academy and the probationary period, the status of Explorer Recruit will change to Explorer.
Meetings/training are held on a regular basis. The purpose of the meetings and training sessions will be to educate the explorer in the different areas of the Marina Police Department and other law enforcement agencies. Films, guest speakers, lectures, practical exercises and demonstrations are used. Laws and police procedures are taught by police officers. Exams may be included at the end of each class. Field trips are also taken to police departments, prisons, and other law enforcement-related locations.
Explorers gain experience in community relations by becoming involved in many different areas of public relations and crime prevention. They participate with different divisions of the Marina Police Department. They give assistance to uniformed officers in traffic control within the city of Marina and other public functions such as the world-famous AT&T Golf tournament.
One of our most instructive and popular activities is the ride-along program. It gives qualified explorers first-hand experience in observing law enforcement in progress. The explorer rides with an officer in a patrol vehicle as an observer, learning reasons why and how the police officer must react to different situations which occur in their daily contact with the public and/or hazardous incidents.
Explorers are required to put in 12 volunteer hours each month. All approved PAL activities are credited towards the 12 hours, which includes attending meetings/training and ride-along with officers (minimum of 10 ride-along hours per month).
